About EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy.

EMDR therapy has taken Portland, and the world, by storm. This groundbreaking therapy for overcoming trauma, anxiety and other issues is giving people like you another way to heal and has gained recognition for its remarkable ability to unlock the healing potential you already have in you that got stuck, overwhelmed or steered in the wrong direction. I mean, have you ever had the experience of knowing something logically but not being convinced of it emotionally? This is an example of an area in your life that might benefit from EMDR. For instance, you may know you’re safe in a grocery store but your emotions say you’re not and start to give you a panic attack. You may know you’re excelling at work but your emotions say you’d better keep it up or you’re going to get fired, get into trouble or be looked down upon. It’s soooooooooo frustrating not being able to convince yourself that you’re likeable, you don’t have to worry, and you’re safe now, especially when a part of you knows that’s true but another part of you just won’t believe it! EMDR is one of those therapies that helps line up your emotions with your logic, so you no longer have to convince yourself of what your logic already knows to be true.

However, in my opinion, EMDR is a little bit WEIRD! Or maybe I should just call it, different. Because usually when you think of counseling, you think of sitting (or even lying there) on a couch in an office talking about your problems. And you can certainly do that. But not when we’re doing EMDR. Instead, with this method, you’re following a light going back and forth with your eyes as you think about an experience related to your current symptoms. I know…different, right? But if you’ve been to counseling before and seen results that only take you so far, then different is GOOD. That’s the reason I got into EMDR-I needed something different and effective! And it’s so effective, I took the advanced trainings, paid for the required consultations and got the experience required to become EMDRIA EMDR-certified.

And I did it because I’ve seen it be effective, and others have too. That’s why you may have had a friend or two rave to you about it. That may also be why medical professionals and other therapists refer clients to me who need EMDR. They KNOW it works!

EMDR is a well-studied and validated form of treatment that helps to change the way you feel or think about experiences. It can also change beliefs, emotions and body sensations by changing the way the information is stored in the brain. Originally, EMDR was used as a trauma therapy. However, it’s been found to be effective for other issues. EMDR can be used to address trauma (including complex trauma and PTSD), negative beliefs you hold about yourself, anxiety, past negative events, panic attacks, phobias and more. It works on the premise that you aren’t born with the concerns or symptoms that bring you to therapy. The symptoms are influenced by experience. So your current experiences that cause you distress are being fueled by similar ones that were distressing to you in the past. To make it faster and easier for you to understand what’s happening around you, your brain often “matches” your current experience to past experiences that feel similar. That could explain why your “overreaction” is not actually an overreaction-if you consider that you’re reacting to the present situation and the similar, past distressing situations that weren’t processed in a helpful way or weren’t fully resolved. Therefore, you must reprocess and resolve the past experiences that your current symptoms matched to so you can effectively address the current issues you’re having. Makes sense, right?

For example, I remember my first time drinking a mango smoothie. I happened to be sick at the time but didn’t know it and so when I felt sick shortly after drinking it, the mango smoothie became associated with my sickness. It took me years to want to eat mangos again! My brain “matched” the mango taste to that horrible sick experience. Perhaps your brain is “matching” your current situation to a past experience where your parent taught you it’s dangerous to be in this world or you have to achieve in order to feel good about yourself. That can really contribute to anxiety, even if it’s on a subconscious level.

So if you want to be done with all those anxiety symptoms, flashbacks, and sleepless nights, schedule an appointment with me. Discover the power of EMDR therapy that has been recognized across the world and right here in Portland and experience the life-changing benefits for yourself.

EMDR can be done using a lightbar that you follow with your eyes and vibrating tappers that you hold in your hands.

EMDR Therapy Procedure:

1) When doing EMDR, the first step we take is to add to your emotional toolbox so you can better manage intense emotions as they arise.

2) Then, I help you identify a memory or image that represents the symptoms we’ve agreed to focus on while simultaneously activating both sides of your body. Most often, EMDR is done through tapping or eye movement. There is little processing out loud that takes place. Instead, the focus is internal. You can choose to share with me a lot or just a little of what you’re focusing on. In my opinion, this is another GOOD but different thing about EMDR!

It can take several sessions for you to notice small shifts but I still find this modality is often faster in bringing about change than many other therapeutic methods.

The theory behind why it works: The processing of experiences, beliefs, and/or feelings in EMDR sessions is thought to change the way these are stored in the brain. Unlike therapy methods that would have you actively work to challenge your negative beliefs or regulate yourself, EMDR brings about a different relationship with the target memory, belief or concern so that, after something has been appropriately processed, you’re not as emotionally reactive to reminders of it. Therefore you don’t have to employ a bunch of techniques to help yourself feel emotionally balanced. Instead of a belief or event feeling “stuck” in your body so that it keeps coming up in flashbacks or triggers or more subtly in the choices you make and the relationships you have, EMDR helps process the concern more fully or in a more helpful manner so that it no longer feels you’re a victim to your own memories or experiences. To find out more, visit emdria.org or check out the videos near the top of this webpage.

3) After you’ve reprocessed the significant associated memories to your current symptoms, we work on imagining a future without your symptoms to further reinforce the progress. By now, you should no longer feel “triggered” or greatly distressed by the memories we’ve worked through and you can finally move on with your life and find more peace.

If you’ve never done it before and are open to a method studied and proven to be effective, you should really do yourself a favor and try it out. See how it works for you. See how your life could be different.

The benefits of EMDR therapy

EMDR therapy offers a range of benefits for you if you’re struggling with trauma and various mental health conditions. Some of the key benefits can include:

1. Effective treatment for PTSD: EMDR therapy has been extensively studied and proven effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can help you process traumatic memories, reducing the distressing symptoms associated with the disorder.

2. Reduction in anxiety and depression: EMDR therapy has shown promising results in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. By addressing underlying traumatic experiences, it can help you manage and alleviate these mental health conditions.

3. Improved self-esteem and self-confidence: EMDR therapy can help you develop a more positive self-image by reprocessing negative beliefs and experiences. This can lead to improved self-esteem and self-confidence. Remember that part I said earlier about how it helps you line up logic with feelings? Yeah-now you can know and feel your worth!

4. Enhanced emotional regulation: EMDR therapy helps you develop healthier coping mechanisms and emotional regulation skills. By reprocessing distressing memories, you can change your baseline level of anxiety and not have to work so hard. And you’re learning better ways to manage your emotions in the process.

5. Long-lasting change: EMDR therapy is known for its ability to produce lasting change. Once traumatic memories are properly reprocessed, individuals often experience a reduction in distressing symptoms that can be sustained over time.

FAQs

  • EMDR is a well-known and validated treatment particularly for trauma, so insurance companies actually seek out therapists who practice it. And since EMDR is especially effective for trauma, and you getting better means less money paid out by insurance, then insurance companies are usually happy to pay for it.

I am in-network with PacificSource. If that is not your insurance, I charge $175/session. You may be able to get reimbursed by your insurance with out of network benefits. Check out my fees and insurance page for more information.

Ask me about extending sessions so you can have an “EMDR intensive” if interested.

EMDR intensives are longer therapy sessions to help you get a jump start on feeling better faster. Research suggests they can accelerate healing. EMDR intensives are not covered by insurance, but they do offer you the opportunity to boost your healing while not having to come into therapy on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

  • Yes, EMDR can be done online. In fact, I do it all the time. Some people prefer the in-person option which is why I offer it, and it is nice to start our EMDR sessions in person if possible but preliminary research done (especially during COVID when therapists were not usually meeting in person with clients) suggests that EMDR is just as affective online as it is in person. In fact, I have a slick HIPPA compliant online platform I use that allows you to follow the shape of a ball across the screen with your eyes and some of my clients have liked this method more than in-person EMDR.

  • People who struggle to feel their emotions may not benefit as much from EMDR. If that’s you, I work with you first to help you become more mindful of your emotions so that EMDR can be effective. On the other hand, if you experience your emotions intensely to the point of not feeling like you can function, I also assist you in building more skills to regulate them prior to getting into reprocessing past negative events. In addition, if you dissociate at high levels, I spend more time preparing you for EMDR prior to getting into it. I also couple it with IFS and other modalities and techniques I’ve learned to make it more manageable for you. Don’t worry-I’ve got you! I’m not going to dive into EMDR with you before you’re ready. And our relationship is always collaborative. We talk together about if we both feel you are ready to move forward in your healing journey before doing EMDR.

  • The short answer is, YES! I offer 90 minute blocks of time to focus on a very specific issue so you can see accelerated healing in that area. Ask me for more information!

  • If you consider yourself a Christian, you may have questions about this “weird” kind of therapy. Please feel free to call me up and ask me any that come to mind. I haven’t found any questions come from Christians who are familiar with the theory but apparently this is an often-researched subject. As with all of the kinds of therapies I offer, I am always careful to explain what we do and why and get your consent before continuing. You always have a say in the matter!
